Version 6.6.0 of the tools is now available. Please update to the latest version if you are having issues.

DeDRM_tools_6.6.0.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v6.6.0

This release incorporates works by several people to give initial KFX support to the plugin.  If you are not interested in removing DRM from the new Kindle KFX format, then there is no need to update at this time.  We still recommend using the older Kindle formats when possible for more successful conversion into other formats.

Install the KFX Input Plugin to automatically locate all of the files that make up a KFX format book and gather them into a KFX-ZIP.  After the DeDRM plugin removes the DRM, then the KFX Input Plugin will package it into a single KFX file.

First release using the new directory structure and release script.  Hopefully fixes the problem with KFX and the stand-alone tools.

Decrypting KFX

Thanks to work by several people, the tools can now decrypt KFX format ebooks from Amazon.

If using the calibre plugin, install the KFX Input Plugin to automatically locate all of the files that make up a KFX format book and gather them into a KFX-ZIP.  After the DeDRM plugin removes the DRM, then the KFX Input Plugin will package it into a single KFX file.

If using one of the stand-alone apps, create a KFX-ZIP file by creating a ZIP archive of all of the files in a book subfolder within the main Kindle for PC/Mac content folder and then changing the file extension from “.zip” to “.kfx-zip”.

Release Notes

Another new folder structure, some minor tweaks to the scripts for unusual events, and hopefully a 64-bit Mac OS application that now works from the release download, and doesn’t need an executable bit setting, and doesn’t have an unnecessary splash screen. I can’t do anything about it being unsigned. Apple don’t allow anonymous signing, unsurprisingly. 🙂

Decrypting KFX

Thanks to work by several people, the DeDRM calibre plugin can now decrypt KFX format ebooks from Amazon.

Install the KFX Input plugin to automatically locate all of the files that make up a KFX format book and gather them into a KFX-ZIP.  After the DeDRM plugin removes the DRM, then the KFX Input plugin will package it into a single KFX file.

See this post at the MobileRead calibre forum for more information on Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 (and later) and KFX in calibre.

https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v6.6.3

Release Notes

This release includes the first support for Kindle for PC 1.25.1’s new key file, .kinf2018. As far as I can tell, this is essentially the same as the .kinf2011 file format, just a new name.

Whether the new key file in Kindle for Mac 1.25.1 is similarly just a file name change is not known at this time.

The release also includes improved cleaning of book name when converting book name to a file name.

This release DOES NOT handle Kindle for Mac/PC 1.25 and later.
This release DOES NOT work with the latest calibre beta that requires Python 3 for plugins.

This release release DOES DROP SUPPORT for the stand-alone DeDRM apps. Only the calibre plugins are now included. (& the separate python scripts).

Decrypting KFX

Thanks to work by several people, the DeDRM calibre plugin can decrypt KFX format ebooks from Amazon as long as they are downloaded with Kindle for Mac/PC prior to version 1.25.

Install the KFX Input plugin to automatically locate all of the files that make up a KFX format book and gather them into a KFX-ZIP.  After the DeDRM plugin removes the DRM, then the KFX Input plugin will package it into a single KFX file.

Release Notes

This release adds full support for the new .kinf2018 key files and the new KFX encryption. Many thanks to Apprentice Sakuya for their work on this.

This means that this release now works with the latest (1.28) version of Kindle for PC and Kindle for Mac.

A script to remove DRM from B&N PDFs has been included but not integrated into the plugin, nor tested.

This release DOES NOT work with the latest calibre beta that requires Python 3 for plugins.

Release Notes

This release is for calibre 4.x and earlier.

If you are already using 6.8.0 you only need this update if you use Kindle for Mac under Mac OS X Big Sur.

Pre-Release DeDRM Plugin Only (v7.0.0b4)

A pre-release of the DeDRM plugin only (v7.0.0b4) is now available.  This release REQUIRES calibre 5.x which utilizes Python 3 for plugins. Since this is the DeDRM plugin only, DO NOT unzip the downloaded file.  Load the entire zipped file as is into calibre 5.x.

DeDRM_plugin_7.0.0b4.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/7.0.0b4

Pre-Release Notes

More Python 3 fixes.

  • Help in the configuration dialog should now work. But some of the Help files themselves will need updating
  • More improvements to Kindle decryption in the handling of PIDs
  • Some fixes for key handling for PDFs

Still lots to be done.
If your setup is working OK with 7.0.0b3, carry on with that for now.
If you don’t already have 7.0.0b3 or are having problems with 7.0.0b3, give this a go.

Harper.

(The first version of 7.0.0b4 accidentally included some zip files that weren’t needed. The extra files wouldn’t do anything, but they have now been removed.)

Pre-Release DeDRM Plugin Only (v7.0.1)

A pre-release of the DeDRM plugin only (v7.0.1) is now available.  This release REQUIRES calibre 5.x which utilizes Python 3 for plugins. Since this is the DeDRM plugin only, DO NOT unzip the downloaded file.  Load the entire zipped file as is into calibre 5.x.  To leave a comment, see this post: DRM Removal Tools for eBooks.

DeDRM_plugin_7.0.1.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v7.0.1

Pre-Release Notes

The main change over 7.0.0b4 is an update to ineptpdf.py that should allow some Adobe Digital Edition PDFs to be decrypted.

I currently only have one sample, and it works with that.

If 7.0.1 doesn’t work for your PDF, but 6.8.1 does, please send me the encrypted book and your adept.der key by email to apprenticeharper@gmail.com

I have bumped the version number just to make tracking issues easier. This is NOT a full release. Just testing the DeDRM plugin.

Pre-Release DeDRM Plugin Only (v7.0.3)

A pre-release of the DeDRM plugin only (v7.0.3) is now available.

DeDRM_plugin_7.0.3.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/7.0.3

Pre-Release Notes

This has more changes to ineptpdf.py. It should now handle most PDFs from ADE, on both PC and Mac.

This change now also fixes reporting of metadata in some PDFs, and may fix other problems. This change will be back-ported to the 6.x branch in due course. (Keywords in PDFs should not have spaces, but an encoding of %20 was getting converted into a space on reading in the PDF, and not converted back again. This seems to be a long-standing bug.)

I think I’ve also updated the version number correctly this time. 🙂

Harper.

Version 7.1.0 of the tools is now available. Please update to the latest version if you are having issues. To leave a comment, see this post: DRM Removal Tools for eBooks.

DeDRM_tools_7.1.0.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v7.1.0

Release Notes

This release is for calibre 5.x. It includes the DeDRM and Obok plugins, versions 7.1.0.

For calibre 4.23, you must use the 6.8.1 DeDRM plugin, but the included Obok 7.1.0 plugin should work with calibre 4.2.3.

There may well still be problems with the DeDRM plugin. If you find a book that can be decrypted with calibre 4.23 and DeDRM 6.8.1, but that does not decrypt with DeDRM 7.1.0, please send me the original encrypted book, and your key exported from the DeDRM 6.8.1 preferences. I will try to reproduce the problem and fix the bug. Please send books and keys to apprenticeharper@gmail.com

Please DO NOT send me anything unless you can get it to decrypt successfully with calibre 4.23 and DeDRM 6.8.1

Harper.

Version 7.2.1 of the tools is now available. Please update to the latest version if you are having issues. To leave a comment, see this post: DRM Removal Tools for eBooks.

DeDRM_tools_7.2.1.zip can be downloaded from
https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v7.2.1

Release Notes 7.2.0

This release incorporates numerous small bug fixes contributed through pull requests to the GitHub repository. Thank you to all contributors.

It also now includes code that should handle the latest KFX encryption used by the latest Kindle for PC and Kindle for Mac. How long this code will work is anyone’s guess. It may be that Amazon will update Kindle for PC/Mac very quickly. In which case, the existing work-arounds to get KF8 format should still work.

I am very grateful to those dedicated developers who spend their free time reverse-engineering the DRM code.

Release Notes 7.2.1

I messed up some white space. I still haven’t got KFX to work for me, but I don’t think I’ve actually broken anything this time.
